Broncos, GM John Elway reach agreement on new 5-year deal

The Broncos and vice president/general manager John Elway agreed to a new five-year contract that will keep the Super Bowl champion turned executive in Denver through the 2021 season, the team announced Monday.

“We’re pleased to reach an agreement on a five-year contract with John to continue leading our football operations,” Broncos president Joe Ellis said in a statement. “During these last six seasons, John’s clearly established himself as one of the best general managers in all of sports. He’s demonstrated impressive football instincts, a strong business acumen and a consistent ability to build competitive teams.

When asked about the incident he claimed he was “standing up for my teammates. Whatever crap I catch for that, I’m fine with it.”

He will certainly face criticism after details of the incident emerged from the Boston Globe’s Dan Shaughnessy.

On the day of the episode, Price was standing near the middle of the team aircraft, surrounded by fellow players, waiting for Eckersley. When Eckersley approached, on his way to the back of the plane (Sox broadcasters traditionally sit in the rear of the aircraft), a grandstanding Price stood in front of Eckersley and shouted, “Here he is — the greatest pitcher who ever lived! This game is easy for him!’’

Eckersley made his way to the back of the plane as players in the middle of the plane started their card games. In the middle of the short flight, Eckersley got up and walked toward the front where Sox boss Dave Dombrowski was seated. When Eckersley passed through the card-playing section in the middle, Price went at him again, shouting, “Get the [expletive] out of here!’’
No apology has come from Price or from Red Sox manager John Farrell to Eckersley, according to reports.

ESPN rips ‘one-way’ relationship with NBA stars who sit out showcase games

Good for NBA Commissioner Adam Silver for listening to the complaints of fans, TV partners and advertisers.

Silver issued a sternly worded memo to team owners warning of significant penalties for teams resting healthy players, according to Ramona Shelburne of ESPN.

The Jazz are poised to win the Northwest division for the first time since the 2007-08 season. Thanks to the tandem of the 6-8 Hayward and 7-1 Gobert, Utah will not be an easy out for anyone in the playoffs.

Milwaukee’s Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 32 points and added 13 rebounds, seven assists, four steals and a pair of blocked shots to lead the Bucks to a 104-93 win over the visiting Knicks. The Bucks (31-33) are now just a half-game back of the final playoff spot in the East. If the Greek Freak can continue to play like he did Wednesday and get the Bucks into the postseason, he’ll garner some MVP consideration.

Westbrook got plenty of help 鈥?fellow backcourt mate Victor Oladipo knocked in 20 points, and Enes Kanter came off the bench for 14 points and 10 rebounds. But the 6-3 guard was once again the engine that drives the Thunder.

Robinson probably would have entered the NBA Draft last season if not for a stress fracture in his foot

Youth Mike Webster Jersey
Nate Solder Elite Jersey This was not a great year for Nigel Hayes, who considered the draft last season but pulled out. His numbers dropped for most of the year, but he had a strong finish, including 19 points and eight rebounds against Villanova. In his last eight games, he has scored 15.1 points with 9.0 rebounds, shooting 47.0 percent from the field.

One problem for Hayes is that he is a tweener, with good size and enough playmaking skill to handle small forward, but not enough height or bulk to play power forward, as he has been doing for the Badgers. Still he plays the 3 sometimes, and he no doubt will have to check Robinson—a bit of a combo forward himself—frequently. It’s a battle of second-rounders, and both players could stand to make an impression.

Robinson probably would have entered the NBA Draft last season if not for a stress fracture in his foot, an injury that teams will want to check out this time around. He returned to Florida with a remade attitude, more of a take-charge leader. Now, Robinson needs to secure his spot in the draft. He is an established defensive player, 6-8 and lanky, who has raised his 3-point percentage from 25.6 percent as a freshman, to 34.0 percent last year to 39.4 percent this year. That shooting prowess has helped boost his stock, and the fact that he’s been really good—38 total points on 15-for-25 shooting—in Florida’s tournament run so far will only help.

Should Cleveland close the year with much the same defense we’ve seen lately, and still earn a spot in the Finals in two-and-a-half months, the Cavaliers will earn a special place in modern league history: They’ll be, statistically, the worst regular-season defensive team ever to reach the NBA Finals.

Bulls let a second player wear Derrick Rose’s old jersey number — fans weren’t happy

Anthony Morrow was traded to the Chicago Bulls just before the deadline on Thursday. With a new team comes a new jersey number.

Morrow picked the wrong one, and now he’s changing it.

The sharpshooter chose the No. 1. You may remember the last guy to rock that number at the United Center. His name is Derrick Rose, and Bulls fans take his jersey number seriously.

Noel is only 22 and was the sixth pick in the draft in 2013. But he’s also been injury-prone and carries with him the worry that he is too thin to be a center but not versatile enough to be a power forward. And he’s heading into restricted free agency. I asked a league executive what kind of contract Noel might seek on the market, and the answer was, $90 million.

The Sixers should not pay Noel $90 million, not with the prospect of needing to pay Dario Saric and Ben Simmons looming, not to mention two lottery picks this year. Noel hasn’t developed with the Sixers, and with his injuries and with the crowd in the Sixers’ frontcourt, he probably was not going to. The rest of the league’s executives, well aware of that, were not serving up enticing offers for him.

Manu Ginobli, days shy of 40, finalizing deal for 16th season with Spurs, report says

Manu Ginobili, who’ll turn 40 July 28, is finalizing a return to the Spurs for his 16th NBA season, ESPN.com reported Tuesday, citing unidentified league sources.

Ginobili, who averaged 7.5 points in 18.7 minutes per game for the Southwest Division champion Spurs (61-21) in 2016-17, reportedly had been learning toward playing next season.

He has been part of four NBA championship teams in San Antonio and an NBA All-Star three times. He was paid $14 million last season.

According to the report, the Spurs also are working to finalize a new deal with free-agent center Pau Gasol, who opted out of his contract for 2017-18.

Hield also possesses quite a few defensive question marks, as his size and length aren’t elite for the wing in the NBA. The Pelicans were three points better on defense per 100 possessions with Hield off of the floor than when he was on it, according to Basketball-Reference. This has turned around a bit in the new year, but Hield still hadn’t quite been what the Pelicans were hoping for.

Evans has been slightly better, acting as a lead ball-handler often for the Pelicans off the bench. He’s posting solid 19.9-point, 6.5-rebound, 6.9 assist per-36 minute numbers. Given the rotation stated above, he would likely be one of the Kings’ best players down the stretch. But with this being the final year of his contract and teams looking around the NBA for playmakers with size, one has to wonder if Evans moves again before the deadline on Thursday, possibly even being waived by the Kings. There are certainly a few playoff teams out there who could use him more than Sacramento. The Kings are reportedly planning to waive Galloway, who actually could have value for other teams around the league. (UPDATE: It looks like the Kings will keep Galloway, as reported by Bobby Marks of The Vertical. broncos_132

MLB trade rumors: Red Sox extend 3B search beyond Todd Frazier

The Red Sox maintained their 3 1/2-game lead over the Yankees in the AL East after a four-game series over the weekend, but to stay there a move needs to be made at third base.

Babe Ruth Womens Jersey Red Sox third basemen have hit only seven homers while slashing at .233/.288/.333 with just 39 RBIs this season. That’s why the Todd Frazier of the ever-rebuilding White Sox has surfaced in trade rumors in recent days.

However, New York Mets T.J. Rivera and Asdrubal Cabrera, Pittsburgh’s David Freese and Josh Harrison, San Francisco’s Eduardo Nunez and Miami’s Martin Prado were mentioned by the Boston Herald as potential additions.
Dan Fouts Youth Jersey
Frazier is the biggest name of the gaggle, but he’s batting a putrid .207. Though things may be turning around for Frazier as nine of his 16 homers have come after June 1.

Here are the pros and cons for the other names mentioned as potential targets:

It’s the magic number for win-loss records this year. Both the Astros and the Dodgers are on pace to win 109 games, which would be the most wins in a season since the Mariners won 116 in 2001. There haven’t been two teams to win 100 games or more in the same season since 2004, and two teams with 100 or more wins each haven’t met in the World Series since 1970. Might this be the year it happens again, with two teams winning regular season games at a .673 clip?

On the flip side, the Phillies are on pace to lose 109 games this season, which would be the worst record since the 111 losses suffered in 2013 by … the Astros. Hey, at least there’s hope!

As in minutes — 3 hours, 5 minutes to be exact — which is the average time for a major league game this year and would be the longest in history by 5 minutes. Hard to believe the automatic intentional walk hasn’t worked to speed things up!

we know he will be successful in part due to the work the organization has done with him in getting into shape.

That’s exactly how he’s going to be paid, too. Waiters will get low-level starter money at right around $13 million per season. It’ll be interesting to see if there’s some sort of option attached to the fourth year of this contract in the coming days, but this is right around what a player like Waiters is worth.

And in Miami, we know he will be successful in part due to the work the organization has done with him in getting into shape. He can also run sets on the ball and allow starting point guard Goran Dragic to play off the ball at times, something he’s had success doing in giving defenses a different look.

It’s worth noting Waiters has had some minor injury issues in the past — including during the 2016-17 season. He’ll have to stay on the floor to make this contract a worthwhile expenditure. That aspect of the deal makes this a somewhat risky move. Overall, though, Waiters is not a steal at this price, but it’s also not a problem contract. He’s being paid at his market value.

Limited Kids Alec Ogletree Jersey Westbrook’s situation also has a massive effect on 2018 free agency, as teams will know if he does not agree to the extension that he may be available. The Lakers have been fastidiously preparing to have the space to add two max players and would love the shot to recruit a megastar who grew up in the area. Other teams could manage their finances differently as well, and of course the Thunder would have the opportunity to change the landscape by trading him beforehand like the Pacers did by sending new Westbrook teammate Paul George to Oklahoma City two weeks ago.

As always, the ball is in Russell Westbrook’s hands. He just has to decide what he wants to do with it as the basketball world eagerly waits to see what comes next.

Clay Matthews will miss getting ‘a lot of sacks’ against Jay Cutler

Clay Matthews is really going to miss Jay Cutler. He’s mainly going to miss getting to take him down in the backfield, but that’s a perfectly good reason to miss an opponent isn’t it?

LeBron James: Driving Cavs to ‘be great every night’ behind historic playoff comeback

LeBron James placed a desire for greatness behind an inspirational performance that led the Cleveland Cavaliers to a historic playoff comeback against the Indiana Pacers on Thursday.

He made just 30.8 percent of his 3-pointers, with bad months like November (29.5 percent) and January (26.8) overshadowing good months like December (36.8) and March (37.5).

“It was pretty frustrating,” Green said. “I had games where it felt good and I just didn’t hit them. And then I had — early on in the season, my shot didn’t feel good at all. I just really didn’t feel used to the ball. As the season went on, I was kind of getting the rhythm back. All the sudden, they felt good but they weren’t falling. I knew it was kind of coming back.”

And it should prove to be a big problem for the Cavaliers, too, the presumptive (sorry to go out on such a thin limb there) East champs.

So what happened to Green this year? There have been a number of theories floated, including that he was taking the offensive sacrifice to make room for Kevin Durant — which he did have to do, to an extent. Also, he accepted a large chunk of blame for his Game 5 suspension against Cleveland in last year’s Finals, and was pressing too much this year.

Last season, Green’s versatile offensive game matched his much-respected defense, and the work he put in on his perimeter shot paid off — he made 38.8 percent of his 3s, crushing opposing defenses who paid too much attention to Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson. But Green was inconsistent with his shot this season.

Westbrook’s 15.5 box plus-minus this season not only led the league

If Lowry truly wants a ring, he’ll likely have to leave millions on dollars on the table. According to ESPN, Lowry will give legit thought to a free-agent switch to the Western Conference. Depending on Chris Paul’s opt-out decision there could be an opening in Los Angeles with a likely need for a point guard in San Antonio after the aging Tony Parker is likely miss up to eight months after rupturing his left quadriceps tendon. The likely destination for Lowry is to remain with the Raptors, who made it clear they are willing to pay him over $200 million over five seasons and make other moves to keep up with the big boys.

For comparison, that same night Stephen Curry (18), Klay Thompson (17) and James Harden (17) took fewer shots in their entire games.

The Thunder point guard was criticized after the game, with analysts saying he shouldn’t be taking so many shots. But don’t expect Oklahoma City coach Billy Donovan to change his strategy, because he knows Westbrook doing what he wants is how his team will win games.

Let’s be honest. When Russell has been off the floor for us, there’s been a differential, Donovan said Thursday.

Womens Michael Roberts Jersey A historic differential. Westbrook’s 15.5 box plus-minus this season not only led the league, it was 2.6 points better than any other player in history. His VORP (value over replacement player) of 12.4 came out over the previous single-season best set by Michael Jordan (12.0).

It was one of the most astounding performances of James’ brilliant career, and it underscored the reality of his 2016-17 season: If James is able to drag this crew to another NBA Finals, and especially a championship, it will stand as his masterpiece, his greatest achievement.
